Exploring wheel thrown functional ware especially focusing on the plate, I discovered that the plate has a bigger purpose to serve. The plate can be a canvas for chefs, a foundation for the foods that we eat, and a medium that allows people to gather around to enjoy the pleasures of eating. This body of work elevates the significance of the plate by celebrating the Bauhaus concept form “follows function”. Repetition of forms provide the space to perfect wheel throwing skills. This practice allowed me to achieve a desired form that will help me express function in the restaurant setting.
Often people have trouble considering food and the serving dish as an art in dining. Presenting this body of work on a handcrafted wood table with steel hairpin legs brings personal design elements of furniture and elevating the importance that the table holds. Not only is it a table that people can dine off of; it is a pedestal that brings more discourse into the art world. By showcasing relationships between ceramics and food people will see this experience as a complete work of art.
